The Moloch: a setting sourcebook for KULT

Chapter 5: Piercing the Veil

Delgado leads them out of the sewers and through lively streets into a dilapidated ten-storey tower of flats. They stop in front of a door and Delgado takes a tin of salve out of his pocket and asks the PCs to put it on their eyelids - it helps them see the truth. Then he opens the door. The flat is dark, the blinds are shut. He uses a flashlight and exposes strange tape markings on the floor - with a lot of imagination you find that they mark the outlines of body parts. Delgado explains that there had lived a family of eight here three years ago, and the father had used a chainsaw to solve family matters.

The three walk to a glass door leading out on the balcony and Delgado opens the shutters. He then warns the PCs he is going to open the balcony door and the other side will not be what they expect. When they walk through they do find themselves on a balcony, but it's not the concrete slab they saw when they neared the building. There is an elaborate iron railing with roses growing along the spires. It's dark and cold, and on both sides of the street high buildings of dark glass and steel stretch in all directions, with hundreds of storeys above and below. There is only a narrow stretch of sky with darkish clouds visible above and only a faint line of street below. The buildings seem to meet in the distance to the left and right. The only other discernible feature is one similar balcony on the other side of the street, twelve storeys up and some houses to the left.

Delgado calls this place the True City. He believes it to be the original home of humans, but it is a very dangerous place. The illusory reality they have just left behind, with all its wars and crime, is a safe haven he believes to have been created by ancestral magics to help the ancients flee the True City, but these magics are now in the process of breaking down. Sooner or later mankind will find itself back here, and people like himself are preparing for this moment.

He explains a few further details but is interrupted by a screech - a kind of human-sized bat with a body of black plastic and glass and a human head with a serrated glass beak drops from underneath the balcony on the other side and heads with claws extended towards the PCs. Delgado ushers them back through the door quickly when another screech answers from underneath their own balcony. Delgado throws the door shut and something bangs against it from the other side. They are safely back in the flat, but there is a nasty crack running through the glass door from left to right.

Delgado leads them back to their momentary place to crash, shaken. Jessica already awaits them with another newspaper clipping - this one telling Peter that his wife has returned after having had no contact with him for three weeks to file a missing person report, saying she herself had been visiting her parents in Bavaria with the kids. She did not comment on the charges of corruption and involvement with child pornography...
