Chapter 17: Second Chances
Peter waits a couple of days but neither his other self nor his family return.
On Monday Natalie visits her sister only to have her scream at her in befuddled rage. Only minutes later the doorbell rings again, and in comes Natalie 2, which causes Susanne to break down completely. Natalie 2 gets over the initial shock surprisingly quick and (not having our Natalie's weak will) talks her into telling her a lot of the truth of what happened.
Kurt 2 meanwhile had found out about the disappearance of his father and the imminent dissolvement of the company. He begins to watch his own flat and finds that one of the small guys with ratty faces now lives in the basement flat which a couple of days ago an old couple had lived in. The guy checks Kurt's mail and then usually leaves.
Kurt obtains his mail directly from the postman the next couple of days and thus intercepts his father's letter. He finds that his father is staying on Mallorca, and contacting a friend of his father's who lives there he eventually succeeds in getting his father deeper into hiding.
Kurt then decides to contact Lehmann. Trailing him he is spotted by Peter who has also begun trailing Lehmann and the two follow Lehmann home. Kurt talks to him and finds out that Lehmann intends to leave the police force and go private detective. He's not much help right now - they decide to bide their time.
Our three PCs find that they are not being followed anymore, and weeks pass. Susanne is breaking down completely, refusing to eat, and weeping whenever she's not asleep or O.D.'d on tranquilizers. Peter 2 has never turned up again, neither has his family - we have to guess that all of them have been sold as slaves. Kurt's father is still out there somewhere and Kurt himself is trying to find new bearings.
Then Peter meets Delgado who tells him that he met a person in the True City who may be able to help them, another refugee from the Management. He is willing to get the PCs to him, but they will have to buy outdoor gear and weaponry first because life in the True City is dangerous.
